“Klopp Brushes Aside Forest Complaints Regarding Nunez’s Winning Goal”
Jurgen Klopp defended Darwin Nunez’s controversial late goal against Nottingham Forest, asserting its legitimacy as Liverpool secured a vital win, extending their lead at the top of the Premier League on Saturday.
Nunez, making a comeback from injury, nodded in the decisive goal nine minutes into stoppage time at the City Ground. However, the goal sparked controversy as referee Paul Tierney had stopped play earlier for an apparent head injury to Liverpool’s Ibrahima Konate.
Addressing the incident, Klopp referenced a similar situation in the first half and accepted the decision as consistent with earlier rulings. He noted that if it hadn’t occurred earlier, he would have questioned it, but since it happened twice and was handled similarly, he saw no reason for further discussion.
Earlier in the match, Tierney had stopped a Liverpool attack after a collision involving Forest’s Ryan Yates, with play resuming from a drop ball.
Klopp acknowledged the frustration of Nottingham Forest but emphasized the consistency of the officiating throughout the game.
Nunez’s late goal secured Liverpool’s first league victory at the City Ground in nearly four decades, adding pressure on Manchester City and Arsenal, who were yet to play their fixtures.
Klopp praised his injury-hit squad’s resilience, highlighting their remarkable efforts amid a congested fixture schedule, which included six consecutive wins in all competitions, culminating in the League Cup final triumph over Chelsea.
Reflecting on the demanding schedule, Klopp commended the players for their exceptional commitment and effort, particularly in the fourth game, which he deemed the toughest. He expressed surprise at the squad’s ability to secure victories in all four games, given the challenging circumstances they faced just 12 days prior.
