Liverpool Defender Hit by Covid Setback, Prompting Potential January Transfer Decision
Liverpool defender Calvin Ramsay, currently on loan at Preston North End, is facing the possibility of being recalled by Liverpool due to a setback in his loan spell.
Preston North End manager Ryan Lowe acknowledged that Ramsay, who joined Liverpool from Aberdeen for a potential fee of £6.5 million in the summer of 2022, could be brought back to Anfield this month.
Ramsay’s initial season at Anfield was marred by injury, limiting him to just two appearances.
In an effort to secure regular playing time, Liverpool loaned him to Championship side Preston for the 2023-24 season.
However, the 20-year-old has faced challenges at Preston, making only two appearances and experiencing setbacks with injuries and a bout of Covid. Despite being fully fit now, he has been left out of the past eight match-day squads.
Liverpool has already cut short loan spells for other players, including Fabio Carvalho, Rhys Williams, and James Balagizi, due to a lack of playing time.
Lowe revealed that Ramsay’s recent illness has contributed to his absence from the squad, and the decision to recall him will be made considering what is best for both the club and the player.
Lowe stated, “There is a possibility with everything. We will do what is best for us and the player as well. Calvin has got the opportunity every day, like most players, to get back into the squad.
I had a brief chat with him the other day about it, and he’s obviously disappointed he is not in and around the squad – because he feels he can help and get into the team.” The competition for places, particularly with standout performer Brad Potts, adds complexity to Ramsay’s situation at Preston.
