Wow!’ Jurgen Klopp blown away by Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford after Liverpool draw Merseyside derby
Jurgen Klopp piled acclaim on Jordan Pickford after the Everton goalkeeper denied Liverpool and procured the Toffees a point in the Merseyside derby.
Pickford made a series of recoveries – denying Darwin Nunez, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah – to disappoint Liverpool in a memorable however goalless derby at Goodison Park.
Everton midfielder Tom Davies and Liverpool striker Nunez both hit the woodwork in the primary half and Luis Diaz faced a similar outcome after the break, while Pickford likewise tipped a strike from Salah onto the post in the perishing seconds.
Former Liverpool defender Conor Coady thought he had scored a final part champ when he turned home Neal Maupay’s work however the goal was refused for offside after a VAR check.
The goalless draw implies Liverpool have now dropped nine points this season and stay six behind Premier League pioneers Arsenal, who play their game close by tomorrow.
‘I think we hit the post multiple times and there were a couple of fantastic recoveries from Pickford – goodness, what else is there to do?
‘In this game, simple and free-streaming is unimaginable. You need to dig profound, that is the thing we did. A 0-0 draw sounds bizarre, yet that is all there is to it.
‘It was a super intense week for us. We had a really tough game that went to the wire [against Newcastle on Wednesday], then a few days later you play here.
‘If you open up with a goal, the situation can look different. I don’t know how many derbies I’ve had now – quite a few – but it’s always difficult here.’

Everton manager Frank Lampard was also full of praise for Pickford after the Merseyside derby and said: ‘I thought we were brilliant. It’s one of the best 0-0s you’re likely to see.
‘Pickford made some great saves, you need your keeper to be on it in games like this. He got his fingertips on a few bits today which a lot of keepers don’t get and Allison the same, two top class keepers.
‘I’ve relied on Jordan a lot he’s an amazing keeper and we’re fortunate to have a player of this level.
‘It was a real game of two teams going for it. I can’t fault the players and the spirit. We played well, we’re getting better.
‘I keep saying the same thing. We’re not going from just staying up to the team we want to be.
‘We’re trying to build up. You have to get personnel and work on the training ground. It feels like those wins will come.
‘We feel like we deserve more – although maybe not today. The fans can see a team that fights for the badge and gives everything. That makes me proud.’
While Liverpool’s frustrating start to the season continued at Goodison Park, Virgil van Dijk attempted to take the positives from the derby stalemate.
‘Obviously they had a couple of opportunities and an offside goal,’ he said. ‘They had two good saves from Alisson, I think we had a little more [chances] than that.
‘We should have won in my opinion. It feels like we lost two points. We wanted to stay calm. They wanted to be aggressive, feed the crowd.
‘We had to keep our cool and play quickly from side to side, because the spaces were so massive between the lines. Sometimes we did that, sometimes we didn’t and created unnecessary problems.
‘We changed system a little bit [at half-time] but it’s still the same principles. At times it went well, but at times we could have done better.
‘It feels like we lost points here, but it’s still early in the season. We have to stick together, focus on winning games and take it step by step. A clean sheet also wasn’t a bad thing at this stage.’
