The Main Chelsea victim of Todd Boehly spending disclosed as new Blues star placed for sale at £53m
According to sources, Chelsea spent extensively in the January transfer window, which could result in the departure of a quality attacker.
Chelsea has already signed six players this month. David Datro Fofana, Benoit Badiashile, Andrey Santos, Joao Felix, Mykhaylo Mudryk, and Noni Madueke are the players. Mudryk was the most costly of all signings, with an initial fee of £62 million that may increase to £89 million.
The entire amount spent by Chelsea depends on the source. According to Sky Sports, Blues chairman Todd Boehly has approved roughly £190 million in spending.
Despite improving several areas of Graham Potter’s squad, Boehly is not showing any signs of slowing down. He is rivalling the likes of Manchester United and Arsenal for Moises Caicedo of Brighton.
Boehly is also putting pressure on Tottenham to sign Sporting Lisbon right-back Pedro Porro. If Spurs fail to meet Sporting’s demands, Chelsea will be ready to strike.
Chelsea will undoubtedly rise to the top of the Premier League standings given that they have brought in so many talented young players. However, to avoid Financial Fair Play penalties, they must unload a few existing stars.
Earlier reports stated that winger Raheem Sterling could be sold. Kai Havertz has now joined the list of players rumored to be leaving Chelsea.
According to German journalist Florian Plettenberg, Havertz could be placed up for sale later this year for €60 million (£53 million).
“The fees Chelsea are spending are incredible and a lot of clubs in Germany can only dream of having this capability. But we don’t have these sorts of numbers of here,” the reporter said during an appearance on the Sky Sports Transfer Show.
“Chelsea’s spending is very much a headline over here because it can have an indirect impact on German clubs.
“When you consider the salaries and the contract durations, the feeling is that Chelsea will be a big player in the summer market over here. Thinking of Kai Havertz, he could be a player who doesn’t have faith in the squad at Chelsea and could make another step.
“I’ve heard that Kai is very happy with the Chelsea boss [Potter] at this stage and he’s very ambitious but I’ve heard there could be a transfer in the summer for around €60m. We’ll have to see where he fits into the new Chelsea. But we’re also hearing that Bayern Munich are not interested in signing him.”
It will be interesting to hear what Plettenberg says about Havertz. He appears to be a Potter aficionado. However, he is unsure how the Chelsea squad will gel and come together.
The new signings, particularly Joao Felix, may make the 23-year-old believe his place in the Chelsea team is under threat.
As Plettenberg points out, German teams do not have the same purchasing power as their English counterparts. As a result, only a few of them could afford Chelsea’s £53 million asking price for Havertz.
Bayern has the needed finances, but they do not want to sign Havertz right now. As such, the attacker may have to wait for Borussia Dortmund to make their move before he can go back to the Bundesliga.
