Ten Hag Acknowledges Possibility of a Major Departure from Manchester United
Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has made it clear that Harry Maguire will decide whether to stay at Old Trafford after this season.
Maguire is mostly expected to be one of the players moved by Manchester United this summer as the transfer window closes.
It was later revealed that Tottenham Hotspur are also interested in signing Maguire and giving him the chance to save his career.
Maguire has struggled to establish himself as a regular starter under Ten Hag.
The United manager has made it known that he prefers a center-back pairing of Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez.
With Martinez out due to a season-ending injury, Ten Hag has gone with Victor Lindelof. The Dutchman has even named Luke Shaw in the center of the defense ahead of Maguire at times.
Ten Hag was interviewed by The Times and asked about Maguire’s condition.
“Yes, but he has high competition there with Raphaël Varane [at centre back], who’s fantastic. That describes everything [Varane being a serial Champions League winner].”
“Yes, but he’s up against Raphael Varane [at center back], who’s fantastic.” That describes everything [Varane’s success in the Champions League].”
Ten Hag agreed with Winter that living on the bench for a player of Maguire’s caliber cannot be easy.
“No one would be happy with this situation. He is not as well. He trains always on best levels, so with 100 per cent effort. So he handles that situation well and he’s in that manner and in his captaincy he’s important for the squad.”
When asked whether Maguire will stay, Ten Hag said, “Let’s say I’m happy he’s here and when we needed him he did his job. But it’s also a decision he has to make.”
