Sir Alex Ferguson golden rule has been re-installed after ETH abandons the transfer ban
Erik ten Hag has decided not to pursue a transfer plan with Manchester United, which involved signing Tottenham’s star striker Harry Kane, following a reminder of Sir Alex Ferguson’s negative experience in dealing with the North London club.
Due to the challenges of negotiating with Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy, Manchester United has decided not to take the risk of a lengthy pursuit to sign their star striker Harry Kane. Despite Erik ten Hag’s interest in Kane as the perfect addition to Old Trafford, the club is aware of the difficulties that could arise in negotiations. Kane, who currently plays for Spurs, has had another disappointing season with the club, failing to secure any trophies and being eliminated from both the FA Cup and Champions League in a single week. Furthermore, Kane will be entering the final year of his contract with Tottenham.
Manchester United is prioritizing the signing of a central striker this summer, given that Wout Weghorst’s loan deal from Burnley is coming to an end, and Anthony Martial is expected to depart Old Trafford after a season plagued by injuries. This leaves Marcus Rashford as the only recognized senior striker, but he prefers playing on the left side of the attack rather than centrally. Harry Kane would be a perfect addition to United’s squad and would fill a crucial position they are currently lacking. However, according to The Athletic, a move for Kane would be difficult as Tottenham has no intention of selling their star striker this summer and will work on renewing his contract with the club.
ESPN reports that senior figures at Manchester United are aware of the difficulties of negotiating with Tottenham and chairman Daniel Levy. Levy is considered a tough negotiator who is likely to prolong any transfer saga, which could disrupt United’s summer plans. The report highlights that former boss Sir Alex Ferguson and CEO David Gill made a vow to never deal with Spurs again after a last-minute signing of Dimitar Berbatov in the 2008 summer transfer window. They have kept true to their promise, and United has not signed a player from Spurs in the 15 years since, making it unlikely that Kane will break that streak this summer.
In addition to Harry Kane, Manchester United has shown interest in other potential transfer targets, such as Benfica striker Goncalo Ramos and Mohammed Kudus, whom Erik ten Hag coached at Ajax. Napoli striker Victor Osimhen is also a key target, but his high price tag may be an obstacle for the club. While Kane has not won a major trophy in his senior career and his contract with Tottenham expires in 2024, making a move away this summer possible for all parties involved.
