Paul Scholes identifies Man Utd standout capable of filling in for injured Antony in FA Cup final lineup
Paul Scholes believes Jadon Sancho can step up and replace Antony in the FA Cup final against Manchester City since the winger is playing his best game of the season.
Erik ten Hag’s side defeated Chelsea 4-1 on Thursday night, confirming their place in next season’s Champions League and moving up to third in the Premier League ahead of the final round of games on Sunday.
However, there is serious concern about Brazil international Antony, who was stretchered off after 29 minutes with what appeared to be a foot injury.
While ten Hag requested time to analyze the seriousness of the injury, he classified it as a’serious injury’ in his post-match press conference.
Marcus Rashford was brought in to replace Antony, playing on the left as usual, with Sancho shifting to the right wing.
The former Borussia Dortmund star was outstanding as United produced chances at will in the second half, notably assisting Anthony Martial’s goal towards the end of the first.
Sancho has made the great majority of his 39 games this season on the left, but Scholes was impressed with his effort on the opposite wing.
Antony is already considered a major contender for the FA Cup final on June 3rd, but the former midfielder believes Sancho is ready to step up on the greatest stage.
‘You’ve got to play players and sometimes you just get a bit unlucky and he’s been unlucky tonight with Antony,’ Scholes Premier League Productions said when asked if ten Hag had taken a risk by playing him so close to the final. But he’s bringing in some good players. Tonight, Rashford came off the bench, and I believe Sancho is looking as brilliant as he has all season.
‘I’m sorry the season has to come to an end for him; he’s looking fit, trim, quick, and confident. So I believe he has a chance to compete in that final.’
On Sunday, United face Fulham in their final Premier League game of the season.
