Mason Mount talks will take place soon at Manchester United.
The Chelsea midfielder’s contract expires in 2024, meaning he might be sold this summer.
According to journalist David Ornstein, Manchester United will now begin talks about a transfer for Mason Mount in “due course.”
What’s the latest on Mason Mount’s move to Manchester United?
As his contract issue remains unclear, the Chelsea midfielder looks increasingly likely to leave Stamford Bridge this summer.
For months, both the player and the club have been unable to extend his existing contract, with the Daily Mail stating months ago that an offer of £200,000-per-week had been turned down.
As these concerns play out behind the scenes, it appears like Manchester United are ready to pounce, with plenty of speculation in the media claiming he could be at Old Trafford next season.
To add to the suspicion, Ornstein was able to share another tidbit of knowledge about the subject while speaking on NBC Sports this weekend.
“Now that doesn’t mean it’s done because the clubs will have to open conversations – which I hear will happen in due course,” he remarked (0:55).
“They’ll need to reach an agreement. Manchester United have a lot of hurdles to overcome. Financially, they’ve got other priorities as well.
“But that’s the direction of travel as things stand.”
How much will Chelsea sell Mount for?
Mount is also expected to meet with Chelsea’s leadership about his future in the next week, according to 90min.
Of course, his £80k-per-week contract expires in the summer of 2024, so if he does not extend, the club will have to sell in the coming months if they want to get the most out of their leaving asset.
The 24-year-old might be transferred for £55 million, with Arsenal and Newcastle United both rumored to be interested this summer.
However, based on these fresh comments from Ornstein, it appears like Man United are on the verge of a deal, and if the Chelsea negotiations with Mount go well this week, the club’s next meeting with the Red Devils regarding a prospective sale might be pivotal.
Lampard, who is leaving Chelsea, recently informed the press that it is a “difficult situation” and that the player’s future is uncertain for the time being.
He said: “I don’t know what the solution is going to be because it’s the club and Mason’s issue. I don’t know where exactly Mason is at personally, he’s got a year left on his contract. I know he’s held in high regard at the club and I know the club are trying to do what they can to make him stay, but I also think that Mason, I’d never want to stand here in the modern-day and talk about what a player should do because they’ll see it all from their own eyes.
“I think in the old days it would be: why are you leaving the club? In the modern day it’s: you should move on. And we’ve got into this situation that is happening now.”
