Manchester United’s Witty Response to Pep Guardiola’s Comments Sparks Twitter Storm Involving Hollywood Icon Julia Roberts
Manchester United tweeted a playful message to Julia Roberts after comments made by Pep Guardiola, the manager of their rival team, in which he recounted her visit to Old Trafford in 2016 following a Champions League win.
After Manchester City’s impressive 7-0 win over RB Leipzig in the Champions League, their manager Pep Guardiola made comments about Julia Roberts’ 2016 visit to Old Trafford after a win. Despite the victory, Guardiola expressed disappointment that Roberts did not visit City instead of their rival team. Manchester United responded by playfully teasing Guardiola on social media for his comments.
“Throwing it back to when Julia Roberts visited Old Trafford,” the club posted on their social media channels on Wednesday morning. Accompanying the message is a selection of images showing the actress inside Old Trafford watching her children kicking a football around on the pitch, including one with Roberts standing alongside then-United player Michael Carrick.

During a press conference, Guardiola talked about Julia Roberts’ 2016 trip to Manchester and how he interpreted it. He mentioned that Roberts visited Manchester when United wasn’t dominating under Sir Alex Ferguson in the 80s and 90s, but instead during the period when Guardiola’s team had been performing better than United in the past four or five years.
“She went to visit Man United, she didn’t come to see us, so that’s why even if I win the Champions League, we will not be compared because Julia Roberts came to Manchester and didn’t come to see us – my idol.”
