Man Utd and Liverpool compete for Gavi’s free transfer, touted as second-best after Messi
Reports suggest that both Manchester United and Liverpool are interested in signing Gavi during the upcoming summer transfer window. Gavi, who plays for Barcelona, is considered a highly talented player and one of the best free transfer prospects after Lionel Messi due to his contract with the club soon expiring.
Gavi began his football career at Barcelona’s renowned La Masia academy and made his first-team debut just after turning 17. He quickly became a standout player in Spanish football and signed a new contract in September of last year.
However, complications arose in the following months when La Liga officials refused to register the contract, which meant that Gavi’s status was downgraded to that of an academy player.
As a result, he cannot wear his preferred jersey number 6 and has to settle for number 30.
The situation also exposes Barcelona to the risk of losing him for free when his contract expires at the end of the season, despite the contract having originally included a large release clause.
It has been reported that Barcelona intends to pursue legal action to resolve the issue with Gavi’s contract.
As they seek to repair their strained relationship with La Liga, reducing the wage bill will be a top priority for manager Xavi in the upcoming summer transfer window.
Meanwhile, according to FourFourTwo, Manchester United and Liverpool are among the clubs interested in signing Gavi if the situation remains unresolved. Manchester City may also have a chance due to the attraction of working with former Barcelona manager Pep Guardiola.
It’s not just Premier League clubs that are interested in signing Gavi on a free transfer, as Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid are also reportedly in the running. Gavi, who is 18 years old, has played in 25 La Liga matches this season and has scored one goal and provided two assists.
As the summer transfer window approaches, Gavi is seen as the second best free transfer opportunity after Lionel Messi, another former Barcelona player who joined PSG in 2021. However, with Messi’s contract set to expire soon, there have been rumors of a possible return to Barcelona, although the club’s financial situation makes this unlikely. PSG’s president, Nasser Al-Khelaifi, has stated that negotiations regarding Messi’s future will be ramped up after the World Cup.
“Will we keep Messi and [Kylian] Mbappe? Of course,” he said. “They are the two best players in the World Cup. I don’t want to say anything more about Leo, we have an agreement to talk after the World Cup.”
