Lia Wälti, the Swiss captain and Arsenal midfielder, has announced an indefinite break from football due to personal reasons.
Recent psychological difficulties
Wälti announced her decision on Instagram, stating that the previous few months had been mentally taxing.
The 29-year-old expressed her desire to recover and return to the sport.
“For personal reasons, the last weeks and months have been difficult and mentally and psychologically exhausting,” Wälti wrote.
“It’s been a huge challenge to stay focused and perform at my “usual level” every day.”
“As a result, I have requested a brief personal break from my club and the national team.” I left nationalteam today and will take some time off to focus on my health. I hope to return recovered and with my batteries recharged.
“I wish my team the best of luck against Iceland!”
Captain of Switzerland for the World Cup
Wälti has been the captain of the Swiss national team since 2019.
The team will compete in the football World Cup in Australia and New Zealand in just over three months.
Switzerland is grouped with New Zealand, Norway, and the Philippines.
Lia is an experienced midfielder with plenty of quality who is a natural leader both on and off the field.
She signed for Arsenal In July 2018
The Switzerland captain is composed in possession and calculated in her defensive work, and she is one of the first names on our team sheet and plays an important role in our build-up play. She’s so good with both feet that she completed more passes in the WSL last season with her ‘weaker’ left foot.
Walti is set to make her 100th appearance for the club this season and has quickly become a fan favorite due to her consistency.
