Jose Mourinho calls for changes to UEFA club competition rules that would affect Chelsea Man U and Man City
Jose Mourinho is advocating for a new rule modification by UEFA that would significantly impact both the Champions League and Europa League.
Jose Manager is pushing for a significant change in the UEFA club competitions as he believes that the current format is not equitable. After leading his Roma team to the quarter-finals of the Europa League with a 2-0 aggregate victory over Real Sociedad, Mourinho is advocating for this change. Roma won the first leg 2-0 against the Spanish side, with goals from Stephan El Shaarawy and Marash Kumbulla, and secured a 0-0 draw in the return leg in San Sebastian.
Having previously won the Europa League with Manchester United, Mourinho, who led Roma to victory in the inaugural Europa Conference League last season, is aiming to win UEFA’s secondary competition for a second time.
Mourinho is critical of the system that allows teams eliminated from the Champions League to participate in the Europa League. He believes that it is unfair that eight teams who finished third in the Champions League group stage are given a chance to compete in a preliminary round of the Europa League knockout stage.
The same applies to the third-place teams in Europa League groups, who are given a second chance in the Conference League. Mourinho, who has won the Champions League twice, thinks that teams that have been knocked out of a competition should not be given another opportunity. In addition, he took a subtle jab at Lazio, one of Roma’s rivals, in his comments.
There are teams there who in my view should not be there,” he told Sky Sport Italia, as per the Daily Mail.
“If they are eliminated from a competition, they should go home!
“So if the Europa League is won by a side that went out of the Champions League, then it will be meaningless to me.
“The Europa League ought to be for the teams who went through the whole thing. I mean, Lazio aren’t going into a third tournament now, are they? That’s how it should be.”
Juventus, Sevilla, Bayer Leverkusen and Sporting Lisbon are all in the Europa League quarter-finals after starting the season playing Champions League football.
