Ian Wright Slams ‘Unfair’ Treatment of 27-Year-Old Arsenal Player Amidst Blame Game
“The good thing is that the star is a striker or winger or midfielder. In previous seasons we had the star of David de Gea and if your goalkeeper is the star that is not good; you are in trouble. I’m happy for Marcus… he’s a talented player and a very good person.”
Ian Wright has criticized Arsenal’s ‘unfair’ treatment of back-up centre-back Rob Holding, who has recently filled in for the injured William Saliba.
The Arsenal great went on to say that many are ‘blaming’ Rob Holding for Arsenal’s recent slump, which has seen Manchester City reclaim first place in the Premier League table.
That included Manchester City’s 4-1 win over Mikel Arteta’s side last week, in which Erling Haaland tormented Holding.
It was a game to forget for the 27-year-old, who simply couldn’t deal with the brute force of the goal-crazy striker, but who hasn’t this season?
Many factors have contributed to Arsenal’s inability to win their last four matches, and Wright isn’t happy that Holding is being blamed for it, as he told Premier League Productions (01/05/23 at 2:40 pm).
“Someone like Saliba is a massive miss,” said Wright. “It’s a massive drop-off. I think it’s very unfortunate what’s happening to Rob Holding because a lot of people have been making mistakes at Arsenal in the last few games.
“But, for some reason, simply because Rob Holding has come in to fill the gap of Saliba, which is very tough. He’s getting a lot of stick, which is unfair.
“I think that Arsenal, and certain players, have dropped in their standards and that’s made mistakes. For some reason, they are blaming Rob Holding.”
IF SALIBA HAD NOT BEEN INJURED…
It would be interesting to see if Arsenal’s recent results and performances would have been different if Saliba had not been injured.
Perhaps a slight difference, but not enough to put Man City out of contention for the title.
This is a collective problem, with Arsenal as a whole falling to the point where Pep Guardiola’s team should now win the title, and possibly the treble.
