Graham Potter says that his teaching tactics have not been well received by the Chelsea players.
Chelsea manager Potter confesses his job is ‘in jeopardy’ with his team 10th and having scored just one goal in a six-game winless streak Graham Potter acknowledges his Chelsea job is in jeopardy but insists he has the backing of his players.
The Blues’ boss is under pressure to halt a six-game winless streak against Leeds at home on Saturday.
With his team in 10th place and only one goal in the last six games, the atmosphere among the 40,000 fans at Stamford Bridge might turn toxic if further points are dropped.
Speaking ahead of a week that might define his future in west London, Potter admitted that he can’t be too confident in his position, despite the club’s owners’ support.
“When you are a head coach and you start on this path, you say well if the results aren’t good enough, then you know your career is in jeopardy,” he remarked on Friday. That is our way of life.
“I just have to accept that and do my best and try to improve the situation we are in until there is a point where we are not able to go forward. But that hasn’t been the case and we keep fighting.”
To make matters worse, Thiago Silva will be out for six weeks after injuring his knee ligaments in last week’s 2-0 loss to Spurs.
“You’re always going to miss a player and a person of Thiago Silva’s quality,” he continued. At the same time, it presents an opportunity for other players.” There will never be another Thiago Silva, so we must work together to find a solution. That’s what I believe the guys have been aiming for.
Mason Mount and Cesar Azpilicueta are also out, and Reece James will have a late fitness test due to a hamstring injury.
There will be little sympathy for the Blues manager, who has 32 players at his disposal and commands a club that has spent a world record £500 million on 17 players in the last two transfer windows.
When asked if he feels the support of his teammates, Potter first said, “Oh, certainly I do.”
“When you’ve had the results we’ve had clearly it is not ideal otherwise you would have greater results,” he continued.
“Clearly it is a process of how to get our message across better. How can we structure things in a way to help the players because that is what we are here for.
“When results aren’t good, from my point of view you have to accept that we haven’t done it well enough.
“Now that’s the reality we are in and I am sure the players will take responsibility and admit they can do better as well.
“We are in it together. I don’t feel any loss of anything.
“I feel the support of the players, I feel the support of everyone here. I understand the frustrations externally but among the players, it is a desire for us all to do better and that is the pleasing thing. The results haven’t been good but we are still fighting for each other.”
