Ferguson Favourite Issues Warning to Man Utd Boss Erik ten Hag Despite Trophy Win
Erik ten Hag, the head coach of Manchester United, has been advised not to become complacent and to expect more from his team, even after they recently ended their trophy drought by winning the Carabao Cup. Mikael Silvestre, a former Manchester United player who is highly respected by the club’s fans, including the legendary former coach Sir Alex Ferguson, believes that winning a single trophy does not mean that the team is flawless. Silvestre insists that ten Hag must continue to instill a winning mindset in his players.
In February, Manchester United ended a six-year trophy drought by defeating Newcastle United 2-0, with goals from Casemiro and Marcus Rashford. This victory at Wembley marked their first trophy win since Jose Mourinho’s time as coach when they won both the FA Cup and Europa League in the 2016-17 season.
Mikael Silvestre, a former Manchester United player with a wealth of experience and success, having won the Premier League four times and the Champions League under Sir Alex Ferguson during his nine-year tenure at the club, is now working as a pundit. He hopes that Ten Hag’s team can emulate the success of United’s “golden generation” by pushing forward and getting the best out of the players. Silvestre suggests that Ten Hag must employ the right strategies to motivate and challenge his players.
You win one trophy it doesn’t mean that everything is perfect. That’s what it is. Being consistent and the standard you reach, you have to keep [going],” Silvestre told Express Sport, speaking as an ambassador for Betting Expert.
“There’s no other way. You can’t skip [ahead]. There’s no shortcut. And when you think you’re there, that’s when it’s more difficult.
“You have to maintain that pressure in training, in games, amongst the players, be demanding and the players have to perform to the best of their abilities. Otherwise, they’re going to get beaten.”
Since taking over from interim coach Ralf Rangnick in the summer, Erik ten Hag has brought about a significant transformation at Manchester United, resulting in highly positive outcomes. The club’s fanbase has embraced the high-profile acquisitions of Casemiro and Lisandro Martinez, while Marcus Rashford’s rejuvenation has been one of Ten Hag’s most impressive accomplishments, as evidenced by his 26 goals in all competitions.
Until their recent 7-0 defeat by Liverpool, United had been competing in all four fronts, indicating their remarkable progress under Ten Hag’s leadership.
Manchester United suffered a humiliating defeat against Liverpool, with their defense unable to contain the devastating trio of Darwin Nunez, Mohamed Salah, and Cody Gakpo, who scored a total of six goals. As a result, Erik ten Hag criticized his players, calling them “unprofessional.”
Although the Europa League and FA Cup remain viable trophy options, the team’s recent form has been unimpressive. In their goalless draw against struggling Southampton, Casemiro’s red card has made their previously secure top-four position seem more tenuous, especially with 11 games left in the season. With the Brazilian midfielder now suspended for four games, United faces a significant challenge in keeping their season on track.
But Silvestre has played down fears about the Liverpool result destabilising their campaign and, when asked what issues lie within Ten Hag’s squad, the Frenchman said they simply need to find consistency.
“Nothing is going wrong [with Ten Hag], in my opinion,” he added. “I pointed out earlier that the consistency is what it is. You cannot relax even one per cent in that division.
“You can lose against anybody. As the last result showed – Liverpool beat Man Utd and then went on to lose against Bournemouth. United beat Barcelona and then lost against Liverpool.”
