Ederson makes a ‘blue’ promise to his daughter if Manchester City wins the Champions League.
On Saturday, Ederson will start in goal for Manchester City as they attempt to win the treble by defeating Inter Milan in the Champions League final in Istanbul.
Ederson hopes to be left with a blue face following Manchester City’s Champions League final match on Saturday.
City goalkeeper Ederson coloured his hair blue to commemorate Pep Guardiola’s team retaining the Premier League title for the third time in a row last month. The Brazilian stated that the blue hair was a request from his eldest daughter Yasmin, and he promised to do it again if City beat Inter Milan in Istanbul to complete the Treble.
“My daughter asked me to dye my hair blue for that,” said Ederson. It was a kids’ spray that comes out with water. Of course, if we are champions again, I’ll dye my hair blue again, but only with the kids’ spray that comes out with water – nothing permanent!”
When asked if he could persuade the entire City squad to go blue, Ederson replied, “I’m not sure, there are a lot of players who don’t have hair!” Although City has completed the Double, retaining the title and winning the FA Cup, Ederson stated that they will not be satisfied until they have completed the Treble.
“The last couple of weeks have been absolutely brilliant, being able to lift the Premier League and then the FA Cup and it really gratifies all the work we have put in so far,” said Ederson. “It’s important to be able to celebrate the victories and to take advantage of winning these tournaments, but now it’s total focus on the next game, which is the next final.
“We’ve all been working for this for a long time. The whole team has seen a lot of victories, but also defeats as well. The players who have been here for five or six years, who have seen these sorts of defeats, we’ve learnt from them so that helps us to grow as a team.
“This is what we all want, so we’re going to prepare well to go out on Saturday. We’ve got to approach it as we have done throughout the season. We know, of course, it’s a final on Saturday, which is different, but we’ve got to approach this with the same passion and the same way we did previously – there aren’t any changes for this game.”
Ederson, 29, exhibits serenity on the ball despite being pressured by opponents and claims he “never feels under pressure – even with so much at stake playing for City.” “I don’t feel any pressure at all,” Ederson stated. “I think any City keeper needs to be calm and play with personality,” he says. “There are a lot of teams that try to pressure us, so you have to be calm, get the ball under control, and have the vision to find the right pass.” Even if you misplace the pass, I recall a game against Tottenham in which I misplaced a pass, which resulted in a goal.
“I said to my team-mates after ‘You can still pass to me’, because errors are part of the process. Errors help us to grow, we learn a lot from mistakes. I mainly learn from errors. You can learn a lot more from making a mistake than you can from doing things right, or from winning.
“So I always try to keep calm, to pass this calmness onto my team-mates as well, so they know they can play the ball to me and that I’m calm enough to make the right decision.”
