Chelsea Set to Break Transfer Record with £98m Striker Signing
Todd Boehly is set to spend more money this summer, and Mauricio Pochettino has already picked his preferred Chelsea striker.
After identified his dream Chelsea striker, Mauricio Pochettino appears to have already initiated his summer transfer window strategy. The 51-year-old has been extensively connected with the role of head coach at Stamford Bridge, and it appears like he will get it.
Todd Boehly is hopeful of hiring a permanent successor to Graham Potter at the end of the season after many rounds of ‘good negotiations’ with Pochettino. While the west Londoners have yet to reach an agreement with the former Tottenham manager, there is optimism that he will be in charge come next season.
So much so that the Argentine is thought to have chosen his favoured choice to head the Chelsea line. According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Romelu Lukaku will be allowed to redeem himself at Stamford Bridge upon his return from loan at Inter Milan.
The 29-year-old, who joined the Blues for £97.5 million two years ago, has played 20 Serie A games for the Nerazzurri this season, directly contributing to 10 goals. While Lukaku has struggled at the San Siro, Chelsea reportedly wants to give him another chance under Pochettino.
After netting the winner for Inter in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie against Porto in February, Rio Ferdinand and Owen Hargreaves pushed the west Londoners to give the Belgium international another shot next season. “I think new manager, give him a chance,” the former Manchester United defender remarked. You don’t trust anyone in there right now, [Pierre-Emerick]. Aubameyang isn’t even a member of the European team. This man [Lukaku] just understands where to put the ball.
“I feel like he’s not fit, he’s carrying a bit more weight than normal and what he would like or the club like… still comes in and scores two goals in the last two games.”
Singing from the same hymn sheet, Hargreaves added: “Nah, no chance [his Chelsea career is over], especially when they spent how much? And they don’t have a centre-forward.
“So they’ve got a really good one, just get him fit. He’s proven. His body of work shows he scores goals, so why would you not try and integrate him back in the summer?”
