Arsenal could duplicate Aubameyang’s masterclass in move for”the biggest talent in the world”
Arsenal won the North London derby against Tottenham Hotspur yesterday, but Mikel Arteta will be upset that Chelsea came in and took Ukrainian winger Mykhailo Mudryk from right under their noses, despite being the only team to pay his asking price.
It will be a setback for Arteta, but with the transfer window closing in two weeks, the Spaniard will be eager to move on and seek other targets.
Arsenal have been linked with a bid for Borussia Dortmund wonder Youssoufa Moukoko, however they will face competition from Chelsea (who else), Liverpool, and Manchester United for the 18-year-old.
His current contract expires in the summer, and with the player and club unable to reach an agreement on a new long-term contract, he could leave for free at the end of the season. By launching a move for the player this month, Arteta might obtain a bargain, and the Gunners could replicate their Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang masterpiece from 2018.
After scoring 141 goals in a five-and-a-half year career at Dortmund, the now 33-year-old came to the Premier League, and Arsene Wenger made a strong statement of purpose by wooing him to England.
The Gabonese striker arrived at the Emirates Stadium to considerable excitement, and he was anticipated to significantly strengthen Arsenal’s offense. He scored 70 goals in his first two and a half seasons at the club, justifying his £60 million fee by scoring 70 goals
However, his final 18 months scored only 22 goals, and he eventually signed for Barcelona little under a year ago, after Arteta’s contract in north London was terminated due to various disciplinary concerns.
Moukoko is only 18 years old but, like Aubameyang before him, is already proven his worth at Dortmund, scoring six goals in 14 Bundesliga games this season, and it’s no surprise that a slew of clubs are interested in signing him.
He is quickly emerging as one of the continent’s most promising strikers, with FBref rating him in the top 25% for non-penalty goals, total shots, assists, pass completion rate, and tackles among positional peers in Europe’s top five divisions over the past year.
His quick development has sparked comparisons to former Dortmund attacker Erling Haaland, who hailed the youngster back in 2020 by saying: “I think he’s the biggest talent in the world right now. That’s an incredible 16 years and 1 day. He has a bright future ahead of him.”
Moukoko’s goals and achievements at Arsenal could even eclipse Aubameyang’s if Arteta is successful in luring him to the club, and he could be a focal point of the Gunners’ attack for years to come if he plays at the Emirates.
