Arsenal and Tottenham had previously been connected with Roma midfielder Nicolo Zaniolo.
Arsenal and Tottenham target Nicolo Zaniolo has acknowledged that his agent will discuss his future with Roma. The 23-year-future old’s in Italy is uncertain because his contract at the Stadio Olympico expires in 2024, and the club may attempt to sell in the next six months to maximize his transfer value if he does not extend his contract.
Zaniolo has been linked with a move to the Premier League in the last six months, with Arsenal and Tottenham also keen. Spurs seemed to be the most interested with the midfielder. Fabio Paratici reportedly entered talks with Roma, but the two teams were unable to reach a deal.
It remains to be seen whether either side will pursue the Italian again in the coming months, but it is apparent that the player himself is beginning to consider his future, confirming that his agent will shortly undertake negotiations with Roma. Meanwhile, he says that his sole concentration is on his current work.
“I’m doing well at Roma, but let’s focus on the game now,” he told Sportmediaset. “My agent will speak with the club; I don’t consider these things.”
Zaniolo joined Roma from Inter Milan in 2018 and has played 128 times for the club in four and a half years. His tenure in Rome has been plagued by injury, with the 23-year-old suffering two ACL injuries in the space of one year. He has continued to have awful luck with injuries this season, missing three weeks of activity due to a dislocated shoulder.
“This is a club choice,” he told reporters ahead of the north London derby. “This is undoubtedly a difficult season for Lucas. At the same time, and honestly, when we planned this season, Lucas was an essential player for us.
“The damage is for me and the squad because Lucas is a superb player who also helped us reach the Champions League.” Lucas is a good player who also helped us reach the Champions League, but we were unable to employ him due to injury. If you question me about the club’s decision, I respect the club’s decision.”
It remains to be seen what comes of the talks between Zaniolo’s agent and Roma, although possible bidders like as Tottenham and Arsenal are expected to keep a close eye on the situation.
